LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday, as political parties gear up for general elections.
The PML-N said that Zardari called on the prime minister at his residence in Model Town where the two discussed the country’s current political situation.
The two main coalition partners in the federal government mulled over their political strategy, upcoming general elections and the caretaker set-up.
During the meeting, the former president suggest to dissolve assemblies in the second week of August. PM Shehbaz Sharif assured that he would take all coalition partners into confidence before making the decision.
According to reports, both leaders agreed to hold the next general elections on time and would not tolerate any delay in the polls.
It is also discussed in the meeting that a politician should be appointed as a caretaker prime minister instead of a retired bureaucrat this time.
The PPP co-chairman also commended the prime minister over the International Monetary Fund (IMF) deal which boosted the foreign reserves and brought economic stability.
It is pertinent to mention here that the incumbent National Assembly will complete its constitutional term on August 12. The prime minister however claimed that his government will complete its term on August 14.
The prime minister has also mentioned that elections will be held in October of November and it is the responsibility of the election commission to announce the election date and schedule.
