ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have agreed to remove Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani through a no-trust move, a private news channel reported on Sunday.
The PML-N and PPP have finalized the requisition for the removal of Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and the senators of both parties have signed it, ARY News reported.
The PML-N and the PPP have begun contacting organizations for assistance, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), Awami National Party (ANP), and others.
Yousuf Raza Gilani, a senator for the Pakistan People’s Party, is a strong candidate to be the next chairman, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
Earlier this year, the opposition-driven motion of no-confidence against Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani was defeated.
The motion to move a no-confidence vote against Sanjrani had been easily approved by opposition senators just hours before the outcome, with 64 voting in favor.
The opposition fell three short when the results of the secret vote were revealed, despite only needing 53 of the 64 senators to remove Sanjrani.
The final voting total was 50 in favor of the motion, 5 against, and 45 abstentions.
