KARACHI: Pakistan and India are reportedly involved in talks to play a historic Test match on Australian soil after the success of their T20 World Cup clash which saw over 90,000 people at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Multiple foreign media reports quoted former Australia all-rounder Simon O’Donnell as saying that talks were probably already underway for India and Pakistan to play a Test match Down Under following the huge success of the T20 match between the fierce rivals India and Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23.
O’Donnell says there’s also been talk of a potential triangular One-Day International series taking place between India, Pakistan and Australia if the hopes of a Test match fall through.
“That (their T20 World Cup clash) was extraordinary,” O’Donnell said on SEN Breakfast.
“That game itself is the one that’s held the tournament up so far, people keep referring back to it.
“It was magnificent sort of stuff, to the level that I can say there will be discussions being had, or there are discussions being had to play a Test match here,” he maintained.
O’Donnell claimed that there is also the possibility of a triangular ODI series between India, Pakistan and Australia
“There’s also the possibility of a triangular One-Day series between India, Pakistan and Australia or a Test match between India and Pakistan. My word there are [conversations happening] in the wake of this [T20 World Cup clash]. There are already discussions taking place,” he concluded.
The arch-rivals last played a Test against each other in 2007 and it has been over ten years since they last played a white-ball series Since then, the two have only met when they have been drawn against each other in ICC and ACC tournaments.
There have been 59 Test matches between India and Pakistan. Out of these 59 games, Pakistan has won 12 times compared to India’s 9 victories. There were 38 draws in games.
India and Pakistan have faced off against each other 203 times at the international level to date, with Pakistan outperforming India in Tests and ODIs.
