For the first time in Pakistan’s history, a PIA Boeing 737 is being transported via road from Karachi to the Civil Aviation Institute in Hyderabad covering more than 150 kilometers.
This massive shift includes a 74-wheeled trailer carrying the fuselage, with the wings and tail sections separately transported.
Transport firm owner and director Malik Humayun Khalid said that the aircraft is 110 feet long and weighs 40 tons. It will now help students at the Civil Aviation Institute in their study.
The experts of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) transported the fuselage on the motorway without blocking the traffic. CAA staff and Motorway Police follow the protocol, exercising extreme caution. According to a motorway police official, the cargo company, after winning the tender to transport the aircraft, contacted the National Highway Authority (NHA) to get permission to take the road where such an “abnormal load” could be allowed.
“After that, the motorway police headquarter in Islamabad was being informed about the operation. The motorway police reviewed route, set SOPs (standard operating procedures) of the route and devised the traffic management plan.
The CAA representative acknowledged the work by logistics of the Pakistan Airports Authority in facilitating the movement and safe transfer of aircraft at Hyderabad.
