Customs officials at New Islamabad Airport have detained a steward from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for attempting to smuggle 15 iPhones.
The steward had arrived from Canada, bringing the expensive devices with him, Dialogue Pakistan reported on Saturday.
A PIA spokesperson confirmed that the steward was traveling on a tourist visa as a passenger on the Canada-Islamabad flight. Upon arrival in Islamabad, customs officers discovered the iPhones during a routine check. Although the steward was not on duty, PIA has issued him a show-cause notice and he is now in custody pending legal action.
This incident follows a similar case in October at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport, where customs officials seized valuable mobile phones worth millions of rupees.
PIA air hostess Nadia Batool was found with 30 iPhones, valued at over Rs 11.2 million, which she had concealed on her person and in her belongings. Two passengers, Muhammad Arshad and Fariha Amin, were also caught attempting to smuggle phones worth Rs 5.5 million in their luggage.
All three individuals were arrested, and formal charges have been filed.
