Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) on Tuesday asked the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the murder of senior journalist Arshad Sharif.
The senior journalist was killed in Kenyan capital Nairobi on October in a shooting incident that first the Kenyan police described as a case of “mistaken identity”, but since the seasoned journalist’s post-mortem and his body’s transfer to his home country, several Kenyan news outlets have not only questioned the police’s conduct but have raised questions over the manner in which he was killed.
The PFUJ has written a letter to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Umar Ata Bandial pleading with the top court to act suo motu and establish a judicial commission in the murder case that would be overseen by a sitting judge.
The journalist body further urged the CJP to investigate the case transparently in order to bring justice to Arshad Sharif’s family and the journalist body.
Earlier, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) rejected the inquiry commission proposed by the government to investigate the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif.
The PFUJ representative had called the inquiry commission “weak” and said that no commission that was controlled by the current ministers would be accepted.
It is important to note that the federal government authorized the creation of a three-member inquiry commission to look into the killing of senior journalist Arshad Sharif. The commission will be led by a retired judge from the Lahore High Court (LHC).
