Petrol prices increased in line with global rates, claims Hammad Azhar

Energy minister highlights that gas is cheaper in Pakistan compared to India.

LAHORE: Energy Minister Hammad Azhar on Saturday addressed the continuous hype regarding the increase in petrol prices, saying that the hike stems from the demand-supply crisis in the international market.

Speaking to a private news channel, the federal minister pointed out that the increase in petrol prices was in line with international market, “not because of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)”.

“The petrol price has been increased on the recommendation of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA),” Azhar said, adding that the increase may be more or less than the proposed price, but the Ministry of Finance “will know about the actual numbers”.

The minister also addressed the criticism received over the government’s move, saying that increasing the prices of petroleum products was a most difficult task for the government. “We are also bearing the burden of increasing prices of petroleum products,” he added.

Hammad Azhar highlighted that the price of petrol has gone up globally, and the “government’s capacity to provide relief in the prices of petroleum products is dwindling”.

Comparison prices with those in other countries, Azhar said that even in countries where there is more poverty than Pakistan, the price of petrol is higher. He said that the incumbent government has reduced the petroleum levy from 30% to 5.5%.

Regarding the country’s gas crisis, the minister said that gas is cheaper in Pakistan compared to India. “Gas prices have risen in the UK and other countries, but not here Pakistan,” he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the government announced a massive price hike in petroleum products, increasing the per litre cost of petrol by Rs10.49 and high-speed diesel by Rs12.44 for the next fortnight.
