BAHAWALPUR: Chief of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Maulana Fazlur Rehman has asserted that the opposition was struggling to bring true democracy to Pakistan and “we all are united on the issue.”
Leaders of the 11-party opposition alliance, which aims to send Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government packing, gathered in Bahawalpur today (Sunday) for the alliance’s latest power show.
“Prime Minister Imran’s statement that he had the backing of the army was an admission that he does not have the backing of the people,” Maulana Fazl said while addressing a huge crowd in Bahawalpur rally, hosted by the PML-N.
Maulana Fazl announced that the 11-party alliance would stage a sit-in in front of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) headquarters in Islamabad to protest against delays in the hearing of PTI’s foreign funding case.
“Election Commission is delaying the case because the largest chunk of money for PTI came from Israel,” he said. Apparently referring to the establishment, Fazl said that it must clarify its position whether it is the one responsible for bringing the current government into power.
He also dismissed ‘rumours’ of rifts within the PDM, saying that when multiple parties sit together, everyone has their own point of view but that does not mean disagreement over core issues.
“The government says we have disagreement among us but the reality is in stark contrast to what the government thinks. Unlike the government, PDM has leaders with political maturity,” he added.
He further said the alliance will continue to use its legal and constitutional right until the present government is removed from power. “You cannot govern by stealing people’s vote. True representatives of the people are part of PDM,” he added.
“Today, Afghanistan does not want to talk to you. India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Iran and all regional countries were progressing expect Pakistan which has fallen behind,” he concluded.
