Palestinian journalist and activist Bisan Atef Owda won the 2024 News and Documentary Emmy Award for Outstanding Hard News Feature: Short Form for her project, “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive.”
This victory came just five days after a campaign to revoke her nomination was rejected by the Television Academy.
The documentary captures Owda’s day-to-day life in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war, which has ravaged the region since October 8 of the previous year. Earlier in the year, the same project earned her a Peabody Award.

Despite the acclaim, Owda’s nomination faced controversy, with the Jewish nonprofit Creative Community for Peace opposing it, claiming she was affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a group designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S.
Owda, who is widely known on social media platforms like Instagram (with 4.7 million followers) and TikTok (191,500 followers), continues to document her experiences during the ongoing conflict.
