In Pakistani society, the transgender community typically relies on handouts for survival. However, Doti, Pakistan’s first transgender carpenter is determined to challenge this prevailing perception. Doti aspires to create a space where transgender individuals can feel secure in their own identities and lead lives on their own terms.
Doti emphasized the importance of engaging in meaningful labor instead of resorting to begging. She shared that her group of 15 transgender individuals has been actively involved in calligraphy and carpentry for the past five years. They specialize in crafting intricate calligraphy trays through their carpentry work.

The inspiration for this initiative came from their daughter, Mahnoosh. Doti mentioned that, with the current workforce of 15 individuals, they hope to expand as the demand for their work increases. Doti encouraged others in the transgender community to pursue honest work, highlighting that they began their journey by learning the trade.
In essence, Doti sees their carpentry and calligraphy work as a positive step towards self-sufficiency, fostering a sense of empowerment within the transgender community and challenging societal norms.
