The Pakistan Football League (PFL) announced on Wednesday that it would award a cash prize of Rs1 million and offer a “prominent position” in the league to Muhammad Riaz, a struggling footballer who recently garnered attention after a viral video showed him selling popular street food to make ends meet.
“I, on behalf of the PFL, am pleased to award Muhammad Riaz Rs1 million and a prominent position in the league,” PFL Chairman Farhan Junejo stated. “He is not only an exceptional player but has represented Pakistan on global soccer platforms. Such incredible talent deserves all the support we can provide.”
The PFL, which operates as a franchise league backed by a UK-based company and foreign investment, is dedicated to elevating football in Pakistan from grassroots to a professional level.
Earlier, Riaz, who represented Pakistan in the 2018 Asian Games, was captured on video frying jalebis in the city of Hangu. The video sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many condemning the lack of support from the government and sports organizations for the athlete.
