The delegation, which included Senator Bushra Anjum, Senator Talha Mahmood and psychiatrist Dr Iqbal Afridi, held a nearly three-hour-long meeting with Aafia Siddiqui on the instructions of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
During the meeting, Dr Aafia apprised the delegation of the difficulties faced by them and expressed hope for justice.
Aafia Siddiqui was sentenced to 86 years in prison in 2010 for the attempted murder and assault of U.S. personnel in an Afghan prison. She is currently being held at a high-security prison in Fort Worth, Texas.
The delegation’s visit is part of Pakistan’s efforts to secure the release of Aafia Siddiqui, who has repeatedly requested US authorities to consider and revisit her case.
The Pakistani delegation also met with members of Congress and State Department officials to discuss Aafia Siddiqui’s case and convince authorities to release her on humanitarian grounds.
The delegation has also appealed to President Joe Biden to release Aafia Siddiqui before the end of her presidential term on January 20, 2025.
