Pakistani mountaineer Murad Sadpara met with an accident while attempting to summit the eight-thousander Broad Peak, sparking urgent calls for a rescue operation from fellow climbers on Sunday.
Sadpara was part of a Pakistani climbing team that recently succeeded in recovering the body of a porter who had died on K2 a year earlier.
On Sunday, Pakistani climber Naila Kiani shared on Facebook that Sadpara had encountered an accident at Broad Peak, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region of northern Pakistan.
“We’re requesting the Pakistan Army to send four climbers from Skardu to the Broad Peak crampon point to bring him back safely,” Kiani wrote.
Broad Peak is considered one of the “safer” 8,000-meter peaks, with a more straightforward route compared to K2. Standing at 8,047 meters (26,555 feet), it is the 12th highest mountain in the world.
“Please keep Murad in your prayers for a safe return to Skardu,” wrote fellow mountaineer Abid Sadpara on Facebook. “Sadly, we are resorting to social media as no one listens to us.”
Pakistan is home to five of the world’s 14 mountains that rise above 8,000 meters, including K2 and Nanga Parbat, known for their dangerous climbs. These peaks attract climbers from all over the world.
