ISLAMABAD: Pakistan witnessed a spike in coronavirus cases as the country recorded 3,495 cases from the virus with a span of 24 hours, while 61 people succumbed to the disease.
According to the latest statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the national tally of cases now currently stands at 615,810 with the inclusion of fresh infection.
The coronavirus has claimed 61 more lives during the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 13,717. The total count of active cases is 24,592. The positivity ratio was recorded at 7.87 percent during the past one day.
In the past 24 hours, as many as 1,634 patients have recovered from the virus in a day and 2,062 patients are still in critical condition including 84 new cases. A total of 44,377 tests were conducted across the country during this period.
Punjab has witnessed a sudden surge in coronavirus cases as there are 11,021 active cases in the province. The total number of recorded cases are 191,186 while 5,896 people have succumbed for the virus.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has also witnessed a surge with 3,958 active cases. The total number of cases are 77,443 and the death toll has reached 2,188. Islamabad has 4,117 active cases while the federal capital has recorded 49,476 cases and 531 deaths so far.
Meanwhile, another batch of 500,000 doses of Sinopharm’s coronavirus for China landed in Nur Khan Airbase on Tuesday, the Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination said. Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, along with officials from the health ministry were present to receive the vaccine doses.
Pakistan launched COVID-19 vaccination for the general public on March 10 starting with older people,. The health ministry said the vaccine doses were a “gift” from China and would be distributed among the provinces for inoculation. Dr Sultan thankedChina for its generous gift and said Beijing has always shown unwavering support for Islamabad in times of need.
