Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in July, marking a key diplomatic role during its current term as a non-permanent member for 2025–2026.
In preparation for this leadership position, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, Ambassador Ahmed outlined Pakistan’s proposed program of work for the month-long presidency, emphasizing that the country will lead the Security Council in an open, transparent, and consultative manner.
The discussion between Ambassador Ahmed and Secretary-General Guterres focused on pressing global challenges currently on the Council’s agenda. These included the escalating crisis in the Middle East, as well as key developments in Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Both sides also highlighted the crucial role of UN peacekeeping operations in maintaining international stability and supporting the Council’s objectives.
Ambassador Ahmed reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment, alongside other member states, to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and pursue the peaceful resolution of international disputes. This upcoming presidency will be Pakistan’s first during its current term and forms part of its broader efforts to contribute constructively to global peace and security.
