Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed gratitude to Iran for standing with Pakistan during the recent tensions with India, while also reaffirming Pakistan’s support for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan considers Iran its “second home” and intends to deepen bilateral relations across cultural, historical, and strategic sectors.
“I am delighted to visit Iran. The two countries share long-standing historical and cultural ties,” PM Shehbaz said, adding that both sides have agreed to further enhance cooperation in various fields to strengthen relations.
Referring to recent regional tensions, the Prime Minister thanked Iran for its consistent diplomatic engagement and concern. “Iranian leadership, including the ambassador, remained in constant contact with us. I extend my gratitude for Iran’s expression of solidarity with Pakistan during challenging times,” he said.
The Prime Minister stated that Pakistan exercised restraint in the face of provocations but also responded decisively with the full support of the nation and its armed forces. He reaffirmed that Pakistan seeks peace in the region and is ready for dialogue with India on all core issues, including trade, water disputes, and counterterrorism.
“We want a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir issue in accordance with UN resolutions and the Indian Lok Sabha’s commitments,” he said. “If India chooses aggression again, Pakistan will respond decisively. But if India opts for peace, we will reciprocate sincerely.”
On international issues, PM Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned Israeli atrocities in Gaza, stating, “The stories of oppression in Gaza are beyond words. Over 54,000 Palestinians have been martyred due to Israeli brutality.”
He urged the international community to play its role in enforcing a ceasefire, warning that future generations will not forgive silence in the face of genocide.
Concluding the press conference, the Prime Minister said, “Pakistan stands shoulder to shoulder with the Iranian people and fully supports Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.”
