TEHRAN: Pakistan has showcased its carpet artistry alongside other member states at the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) regional exhibition of carpet arts, held in Tehran.
In addition to the carpet exhibition, a workshop on the art of old carpet restoration was also inaugurated, according to a press release from Tehran on Saturday.
During the inauguration of the carpet exhibition, Saad S. Khan, President of the Economic Cultural Institute (ECI) in Tehran, emphasized that carpet weaving is one of the most ancient art forms shared by all regional countries.
Professors and scholars at the event discussed the shared heritage of carpet designs in Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and other ECO member states. Dr. Saad highlighted that Turkmenistan even celebrates Carpet Day annually as a national holiday.
The scholars underscored the cultural significance of carpets, noting their role as cultural symbols, their importance in traditional hospitality, and carpet weaving as a livelihood. Experts also demonstrated various techniques for restoring old, worn, or torn carpets, some up to a century old, making them look as good as new.
