Pakistan has reported an additional case of the polio virus from the Larkana district in Sindh on Saturday, marking the third occurrence of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in 2025.
The National Institute of Health’s Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication has verified the presence of the polio virus.
According to a statement from the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme, “This marks the second polio case identified in Sindh this year, resulting in a total of two cases in Sindh and one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”
In 2024, the country documented a total of 74 polio cases, with 27 from Balochistan, 22 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 23 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.
The press release highlighted that “The Pakistan Polio Program organizes several mass vaccination campaigns annually, delivering vaccines directly to children’s homes, while the Expanded Program on Immunization offers free vaccinations against 12 childhood diseases at health facilities.”
Earlier this month, the first nationwide polio campaign of 2025 was successfully completed, achieving 99% of its targets throughout the country.
