ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reached a new record as it reported over eight thousand coronavirus cases in a single day on Friday, the highest since the start of the pandemic nearly two years ago.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 8,183 cases and 30 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 1,402,070 while the death toll stands at 29,192.
The positivity ratio was recorded at 11.92%, while the number of active has surged to 98,221 after the recent surge in cases, which is the highest level ever. There was an a recorded increase in testing as 68,624 tests were conducted in the previous day leading to new cases.
There are 1,351 people who still remain in critical condition including 113 new patients in the previous day. Overall 1,274,657 people have recovered from the virus, including 1,786 in the past day.
Sindh has recorded the highest number of cases and remains the worst affected region. The province has recorded 535,965 cases and 7,785 deaths while there are 51,222 active cases. Punjab has recorded 471,925 cases and 13,132 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has also surged to 25,197. Islamabad has recorded 123,648 cases and 979 deaths while there are7,047 active cases in the federal capital.
The number of cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 189,300 and 5,989 deaths, while Balochistan has reported 34,187 cases and 367 deaths. Gilgit Baltistan had recorded 10,580 cases and 188 deaths while Azad Kashmir has recorded 36,187 cases and 752 deaths.
Amid the surging cases, the NCOC decided to extend the coronavirus curbs in the country from January 31 till February 15. The curbs were imposed in towns and cities which reports a positivity ratio of more than 10 percent.
