The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has formally invited the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to participate in the upcoming season of the FIH Pro League, following New Zealand’s withdrawal due to financial difficulties.
This development offers Pakistan a valuable opportunity to return to top-tier international competition and improve its global ranking.
New Zealand had initially secured a Pro League berth after defeating Pakistan in the final of the FIH Nations Cup in Malaysia. However, with the Black Sticks stepping down, Pakistan has now been offered their place in the league.
Pakistan’s recent Nations Cup campaign ended in disappointment, despite a promising start. The team finished as runners-up after a 6-2 loss to New Zealand in the final. Although New Zealand had two early goals disallowed, they took control with a penalty corner goal in the sixth minute, followed by a second goal before the first quarter ended. Three more goals in the second quarter gave them a commanding 5-0 lead by halftime.
Pakistan showed brief resistance with a goal from Zikriya Hayat in the third quarter but failed to convert five key penalty corners. This inability to capitalize on opportunities ultimately sealed their defeat in the final.
