The Pakistan Navy marked a major milestone by unveiling its second Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Shushuk, during a ceremony held in Wuhan, China. This launch is part of a broader strategy aimed at fortifying Pakistan’s maritime defenses.
Back in 2015, the Ministry of Defense signed an agreement with China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan. Under this deal, Pakistan secured eight submarines, with four being constructed in China and the remaining four to be built domestically at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works under a technology transfer program.
These state-of-the-art submarines are equipped with advanced weaponry and sensors, designed to enhance precision strike capabilities over long distances. Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, officiated as the chief guest at the launch event.
In addition to bolstering deterrence, the Hangor-class submarines underscore the deepening military collaboration between Pakistan and China.
Pakistan’s naval modernization extends beyond this project, including a 2018 agreement with Turkiye for the construction of four MILGEM-class corvettes, further strengthening its maritime arsenal.
