Two new warships, PNS Babar and PNS Hunain, are set to be inducted into the national navy’s fleet on Defense Day, September 6, as announced by Pakistan’s military media wing on Tuesday.
“PNS Babar and PNS Hunain will simultaneously join the Pakistan Navy fleet,” stated the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). “PNS Babar, the first ship of the Milgem/Babar class, constructed in Turkiye, will officially be part of the Pakistan Navy. PNS Hunain, the third offshore patrol vessel (OPV) built in Romania, will also be inducted.”
Babur-class ships are designed for multi-dimensional warfare, capable of engaging threats on the surface, underwater, and in the air.
Construction of PNS Babar began on June 4, 2020, and the ship was launched on August 15, 2021, with commissioning completed on September 23, 2023. The Babur-class corvette, also known as the PN MILGEM class, is a subclass of the Turkish MILGEM project and includes four heavy corvettes currently under construction for the Pakistan Navy.
Regarding PNS Hunain, ISPR noted that the third Yarmouk-class OPV 2600 for the Pakistan Navy was built at the Galati Shipyard in Romania.
Defense Day is celebrated annually in Pakistan to honor the soldiers who fought in the 1965 war against India.
