The government is poised to introduce significant amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, potentially impacting social media and the spread of disinformation.
Sources indicate that the government has decided to further revise PECA and is preparing additional legislation to address the issue of fake news.
This new legislation is expected to be presented to parliament soon for approval.
The move follows the federal cabinet’s recent approval to transfer the oversight of PECA from the Ministry of Information Technology to the Ministry of Interior. This transfer also necessitated amendments to the Rules of Business 1973.
The upcoming amendments to PECA are anticipated to be substantial, focusing on strengthening regulations surrounding the spread of misinformation and fake news across social media platforms.
