In a major diplomatic achievement, Pakistan has, for the first time, been elected as the President of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) for its 53rd annual session.
According to diplomatic sources, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Kamran Akhtar, has been appointed to chair the crucial session, marking a moment of pride for the nation on the international stage.
Pakistan formally assumed its new responsibilities at the UNIDO meeting held today at 1:00 PM, reinforcing its commitment to global industrial cooperation and development.
The development is being hailed as a sign of growing confidence that the international community places in Pakistan’s leadership and multilateral engagement. Like with other international bodies headquartered in Vienna, Pakistan continues to play an active and constructive role within UNIDO.
Diplomatic insiders revealed that under the current framework, Pakistan is managing an extensive portfolio within UNIDO, overseeing projects worth $350 million. These include both ongoing and agreed-upon initiatives that aim to uplift industrial infrastructure and sustainable development efforts.
Moreover, under the Country Partnership Programme, several new projects are set to be launched in collaboration with UNIDO later this year.
Pakistan’s new position reflects not just international trust but also the nation’s growing stature in shaping the global industrial and development agenda.
Pakistan was elected as a member of the Industrial Development Board (IDB) and Programme and Budget Committee (PBC) of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in December 2021.
