A comprehensive policy framework for the protection of glaciers and addressing climate change has been developed in Pakistan, as reported by national media on Sunday.
According to details, the Ministry of Climate Change has developed the initial draft of the glacier protection policy framework and shared it with relevant stakeholders for consultation. Under this policy framework, an estimate is being made of the funding required for glacier protection. Once the framework is finalized, a summary of the policy will be sent to the federal cabinet for approval.
Glaciers in Pakistan are located among the mountain ranges of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, Dir, Swat, and Chitral. According to a draft, available to national media, these glaciers are crucial for Pakistan’s water supply, ecological balance, and biodiversity. In Pakistan, snow and glacier melt contribute to nearly half of the flow of the Indus River.
The Indus River supports the lives, agriculture, and food needs of over 260 million people. An integrated strategy is needed for the protection of glaciers and water resources in Pakistan.
Strong collaboration has been deemed essential in the sectors of climate change, water, food, and disaster prevention. National policies on environment, water, food, and disaster prevention should be aligned.
The framework emphasizes coordination at the federal, provincial, and local levels and the inclusion of all stakeholders. The policy stresses the need for integrated efforts at all levels—federal, provincial, and local.
The draft of the framework states that glacier protection is possible through stakeholder involvement and interdepartmental linkages. It further notes that harmonized policies can ensure the protection of vulnerable groups and increase climate resilience.
