Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday condemned overbilling scandal by power distribution companies, declaring it unacceptable and vowing strict action against officials involved.
Chairing a review meeting on the performance of electricity distribution companies (Discos), the premier emphasized the urgency of installing smart meters to ensure billing transparency. He also urged for robust measures to curb electricity theft.
The meeting addressed various issues, including those related to the Lahore Electric Supply Company, Peshawar Electric Supply Company, and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, according to a statement from the PM’s Office.
Expressing concern over delays in appointing chief executive officers for distribution companies, PM Shehbaz directed that appointments be conducted transparently and completed promptly. He stressed the importance of merit-based recruitment in Discos, with no compromise on transparency, and urged full utilization of resources to achieve Nepra’s targets.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Economic Affairs Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Power Division Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Leghari, Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima, Minister of State for Finance Ali Pervez Malik, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ahsan Afzal, and senior officials.
