The rise in street crimes has created a sense of fear and insecurity among the citizens of Karachi, as perpetrators continue to carry out offenses without fear of repercussions.
According to police reports on Tuesday, nearly 74 individuals have lost their lives at the hands of armed robbers in the past six months of this year alone, simply for resisting robbery attempts in various parts of the city.
In the most recent incident, a milk seller, identified as 37-year-old Baqar, was fatally shot by bandits in the Qauidabad area. He succumbed to three gunshot wounds inflicted during the confrontation.
Just the day before, 18-year-old Bismillah met a similar fate when he was gunned down by armed dacoits in Bhains Colony.
Additionally, 27-year-old mechanical engineer and Hafiz Quran, Itteqa Moeen, lost his life during a robbery in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal on June 1.
However, the city’s law enforcement has been severely criticized for its failure to effectively combat street crime, with allegations suggesting that some members may even be harboring criminals.
According to police sources, between 2022 and 2024, over 250 Karachi residents were fatally shot, and more than 1,052 others were wounded by street criminals.
Senior police officials attribute this surge in violent street crimes to the soaring inflation rates and the escalating economic challenges faced by the populace.
