KARACHI: At least one dead and several others wounded as a five-storey residential building collapsed in Karachi’s Lyari neighbourhood on Sunday night.
Rescue teams and law enforcement agencies are carrying out relief operations at the site of the incident and making efforts to evacuate the victims from the debris.
Four people have been shifted to the hospital. Police and Rangers have also reached the spot to clear the area for rescue teams. The area plunged into darkness as electricity went out soon after the incident.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the Pakistan Army’s rescue team was sent to the incident site and security forces at the site were rescuing and evacuating people in the operation.
According to a rescue official, several people are feared to be stuck under the debris of the building. The five-storey building first tilted, creating panic among residents, before it collapsed. Residents have immediately started evacuating from the building after it tilted.
The area has been sealed while nearby buildings are being vacated. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has taken notice of the incident and directed city commissioner to save the lives of people on a priority basis.
