More than 30 years after it was recorded, the legendary voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is back with the release of his posthumous album, ‘Chain of Light’, available today, September 20, 2024, through Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records.
Featuring four tracks across 41 minutes, Chain of Light captures the electrifying atmosphere of Nusrat’s iconic concerts. The album includes the songs “Ya Allah Ya Rehman,” “Aaj Sik Mitran Di,” “Ya Gaus Ya Meeran,” and “Khabram Raseed Imshab,” showcasing his powerful vocals and harmonium skills, supported by his brother Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, tabla player Dildar Hussain, and a talented chorus.
The tracks were recorded at Real World Studios in April 1990 during sessions for Nusrat’s seminal album Mustt Mustt, produced by Canadian Michael Brook. The recordings remained forgotten in storage until they were rediscovered during a 2021 archive relocation.
Peter Gabriel, who collaborated closely with Nusrat, praised him as “perhaps the greatest singer of all” and expressed excitement about the album’s release. “What he could do with his voice was quite extraordinary,” Gabriel stated. “This album shows him at his peak.”
Since Nusrat’s passing in 1997 at the age of 48, his influence on the qawwali genre has only grown, inspiring a new generation of musicians, including his family members. Chain of Light not only serves as a nostalgic celebration for longtime fans but also introduces Nusrat’s artistry to new audiences.
