GILGIT: Renowned religious scholar, author and Sufi poet Alijah Alwaiz Ghulamuddin Ghulam Hunzai has passed away at the age of 97.
Ghulam Hunzai was one of the most revered scholar and poet of Gilgit-Baltistan and served a lifelong service to educate the people of the region.
He was the first to translate the Holy Quran in Burushaski language. He had received an appreciation of letter from then Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for his scholastic services.

Shaukat Aziz has invited him to Prime Minister House and present a token of appreciation and expressed gratitude for his tremendous scholastic services. He had presented the Brushashki translation of the Holy Quran to the prime minister.
In addition to being the author of numerous books, Alijah Hunzai was one of the first poets of the Burushaski to work for the development and promotion of Burushaski language. He also the developed alphabet and grammar of Burushaski language.
Hunzai has also written many of his books in Urdu and Persian. He was among the first teachers in Hunza. He started teaching in late 1930s at his ancestral village Altit at the age of just 12 after getting education till Grade 5 which he continued till his last days. Ghulam Hunzai will be laid to rest in Sultanabad area Gilgit.
