ISLAMABAD: A district and sessions court in Islamabad today (Monday) extended the physical remand of Noor Mukadam’s murder accused, Zahir Jaffer, by two more days.
The Kohsar Police Station produced Jaffer before Duty Magistrate Sohaib Bilal Ranjha on completion of his previous two days physical remand. The accused was brought to the court under tight security.
The lawyer of the accused, Ansar Nawaz Mirza, argued that the police had already had his client remanded for five days, saying a further remand was “unnecessary”.
Public Prosecutor Sajid Cheema prayed before the court that a pistol had been recovered from Jaffer, but his cellphone was yet to be recovered. Hence, the court was requested to grant a further two-day physical remand of the accused.
Counsel for Shaukat Mukadam, father of the deceased, also supported the further physical remand of the accused before the court. The counsel prayed that further provisions had been added to the case whereas co-accused had also been arrested.
After the arguments, the court extended the physical remand of Jaffer by two days. The court adjourned the hearing and ordered the police to interrogate the accused and produce him again on July 28.
Noor Mukadam, daughter of former Pakistani diplomat Shaukat Mukadam, was found murdered at a residence in Islamabad’s upscale Sector F-7/4 on July 20.
A first information report (FIR) was registered later the same day against Jaffer, who was arrested from the site of the murder, under Section 302 (premeditated murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s father.
A day earlier, it was reported that a court in Islamabad had remanded the parents of the suspect, along with two of their employees, in police custody for two days. In addition, two of the suspect’s domestic aides, Iftikhar and Jamil, were also sent on two-day physical remand.
