Netflix’s latest addition, the Norwegian-produced series La Palma, is making waves among holiday viewers.
With its tagline “so binge-worthy,” fans have flooded social media, sharing their intense reactions and often yelling at their screens during the most gripping moments. Going beyond typical holiday fare, La Palma offers an unconventional Christmas story that has quickly captivated audiences.
Set against the backdrop of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Islands, which last erupted in 2021, the storyline blends dramatic imagination with a loose connection to reality, prioritizing tension over historical accuracy.
Plot
On the picturesque island of La Palma, a tragic accident involving a glass-bottomed boat claims the lives of unsuspecting tourists. Soon after, Fredrik (Anders Baasmo Christiansen), Jennifer (Ingrid Bolsø Berdal), and their children, Sara (Alma Günther) and Tobias (Bernard Storm Lager), arrive for their annual vacation. Their luck seems to change when they’re upgraded to a luxurious room, but their good fortune may be short-lived.
Meanwhile, geologists Marie (Thea Sofie Loch Næss) and Haukur (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) uncover signs of an impending volcanic eruption, one so powerful it could cause devastation across continents. As tremors shake La Palma, Marie and Haukur must convince their supervisor, Álvaro (Jorge de Juan), to act before it’s too late.
