Netflix has announced the release date for Angelina Jolie’s highly anticipated film “Maria”, in which she portrays the iconic opera singer Maria Callas.
The film will debut in U.S. theaters on November 27, followed by its Netflix premiere on December 11, according to a report from Variety.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Pablo Larraín, known for Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021), “Maria” has already garnered significant praise. It received an eight-minute standing ovation at its world premiere during the Venice Film Festival at the Sala Grande Theatre.
The film chronicles the final days of the American-Greek soprano, Maria Callas, as she retreats to Paris, reflecting on her identity and tumultuous life in the public eye. According to the official synopsis, “Maria” reimagines the life of the legendary diva during this introspective period.
The screenplay was written by Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders. In addition to Jolie, the cast features Pierfrancesco Favino (The Hummingbird), Alba Rohrwacher (La Chimera), Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog), and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire). Produced by Juan de Dios Larraín, Lorenzo Mieli, and Jonas Dornbach, the film is a collaboration between The Apartment, Fabula, and Komplizen & Fremantle.
