Netflix is set to release Elliot Page’s first film in six years, “Close to You”, in the United States starting November 15, 2024. This marks its debut on streaming video on demand.
“Close to You” tells the story of Sam (Elliot Page), a trans man returning to his hometown after years away. As he navigates his family’s reactions and those of his former neighbors, the complexity of his return becomes apparent.
Initially, Sam struggles with the decision to attend his father’s birthday celebration. Once he boards a train, he unexpectedly encounters Katherine (Hillary Baack), his childhood best friend. Their reunion is filled with both joy and an unspoken pain that lingers beneath the surface, reflected in their conversation and glances.
Back home near Lake Ontario, Sam faces his parents, Miriam (Wendy Crewson) and Jim (Peter Outerbridge), along with his siblings Kate (Janet Porter), Megan (Alex Paxton-Beesley), and Michael (Daniel Maslany). While they express happiness at his return, their probing questions prove to be triggering for Sam. As interactions grow more intense, the tension escalates, leading to an inevitable confrontation.
Since its initial premiere, critics have largely responded positively to the film.
