The electricity distribution companies have submitted a request to NEPRA for providing relief under the head of the last financial year’s fourth quarter adjustment, as reported by national media on Tuesday.
In the request submitted to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), it is stated that there will be a benefit of Rs. 53.71 billion under capacity payments, a burden of Rs. 662 million under the use of system charges, and an expense of Rs. 182 million under operations and maintenance.
The request further states that, overall, consumers across the country will receive relief worth Rs. 53.39 billion. NEPRA will hear the requests of the electricity distribution companies on August 4, and the decision made by NEPRA will be applicable to consumers across the country, including Karachi.
It is noteworthy that for a long time, electricity distribution companies have been collecting billions from the public under capacity payments. However, in the current government’s tenure, the requests for relief under quarterly adjustments are being appreciated.
Electricity consumers believe that companies like K-Electric and other distribution companies have unleashed mountains of oppression by overbilling the public in their respective jurisdictions and rapidly increasing the per-unit cost for consumption over 200 units, a practice that continues to this day.
