Students at Karachi’s NED University of Engineering and Technology have broken new ground by developing Pakistan’s first AI-powered driver-less car.
An autonomous car, also known as a self-driving car, is capable of operating with minimal or no human intervention. These vehicles handle all aspects of driving, including perceiving the environment, monitoring systems, and navigating from one place to another.
This innovative project is being conducted at the university’s National Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), one of the nine research centers established by the federal government to promote technological advancements in Pakistan.
NED is the pioneer institution in the country to create an AI-driven autonomous vehicle. To achieve this feat, a specially-designed electric vehicle (EV) was imported from China and equipped with state-of-the-art AI tools.
Dr. Muhammad Khurram, an associate professor at NED and the project supervisor, is optimistic about the future applications of this technology in intercity transportation.

Research students Inzamam and Aleema, key contributors to the project, explained that the initiative combines AI, robotics, and mapping technology to enable the vehicle to navigate complex traffic situations.
It should be noted that the National Center for Artificial Intelligence at NED University is among nine research centers established by the federal government to promote innovation and technological advancements in Pakistan.
