Minister for Information Technology Shaza Khawaja emphasized on Wednesday that national security remains the top priority, addressing lawmakers’ concerns over ongoing internet disruptions. Speaking in the National Assembly, she reiterated that while improving internet services is a focus, safeguarding the country’s security is paramount.
According to a report by Pak Observer, her remarks followed a query from PPP MNA Abdul Qadir Patel, who highlighted issues with slow internet speeds affecting online businesses and education. Patel demanded clarity on when internet services would fully improve, pointing out how these disruptions were hindering daily activities.
In response, Shaza Fatima acknowledged the challenges, assuring lawmakers that her ministry is addressing speed issues. She noted that the internet was not completely shut down during Muharram, as was common in previous governments, and highlighted improvements: a 28% increase in Pakistan’s average internet speed over the past year and a 24% rise in mobile internet usage.
The minister emphasized that some restrictions are necessary to ensure digital security, stating, “Our priority is to protect citizens and their data.” She added that her ministry is committed to enhancing user experience while safeguarding privacy.
Addressing concerns about internet shutdowns, she clarified: “Decisions on restrictions are made by the PTA in cases of security threats. Fixed-line services remain operational even during disruptions.” Apologizing for the inconvenience caused, she assured users that efforts to resolve issues are underway.
Shaza Fatima also announced plans for a 4G and 5G spectrum auction in April and outlined steps to make smartphones more accessible. She revealed that while Pakistan’s internet operates on a 274 MHz spectrum, an additional 550 MHz has been cleared in the past six years with government support. An international consultant has been hired to oversee the spectrum auction, expected to boost connectivity nationwide.
