The organizers of the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival have issued a new dress code for guests attending the gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, which will run from May 13 to May 24.
According to the organizers, completely “nude” or semi-nude attire is strictly prohibited on the red carpet, citing “dignity” and “decency” as the reasons.
As per the official document of Cannes Film Festival 2025, appropriate evening wear has been made mandatory for artists participating in gala screenings. This includes long evening gowns for women and black suits or tuxedos for men.
The document further clarifies: “For gala screenings held between 7 PM and 10 PM, which are attended by film crews, formal evening attire is mandatory.”

Alternatively, women may wear short black dresses, cocktail dresses, black pantsuits, or elegant blouses paired with black trousers. Elegant sandals, with or without heels, are allowed, but sports shoes (sneakers) are prohibited.
For men, black or navy blue suits accompanied by a bow tie or a dark-colored tie are considered appropriate. In addition backpacks and large bags will not be allowed. Storage lockers will be available near Gare Maritime, which will remain open until 12:30 AM.

The document specifically bans oversized or train-bearing dresses, as they obstruct guest movement and seating within the theater.
The organizers clearly stated that nudity of any kind will not be allowed on the red carpet or in any other part of the festival. Outfits that hinder guest mobility, particularly long train-bearing dresses, will not be acceptable.
This year, a strong presence from India is expected at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Payal Kapadia, Sharmila Tagore, Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, Karan Johar, Neeraj Ghaywan, and Urvashi Rautela will grace the red carpet. Additionally, Indian films such as Homebound, Araneer Din Ratri, and Tanvi the Great will also be featured at the festival.
