RAWALPINDI: Motorway police thwarted a bid to smuggle a heavy contingent of arms and ammunition into Lahore and arrested a suspect near Rawalpindi.
The motorway police were on routine patrolling when they spotted a car parked on the side lane of the motorway near M2 Chakri with the tyres punctured. The police went to assist them when suddenly the two suspects suddenly opened fire and away.
When police reached the spot, they founded weapons on the side of the street and alerted that the suspect were on the run. The two suspects were intercepted near Kalar Kahar but refused to stop.
Police alerted the vehicle to stop and chased the suspect who went on the wrong side of the tracks. After a hot pursuit, the suspects fired and fled the scene as the police inched towards them. Nevertheless, police managed to apprehend one suspect, while a search is underway for his accomplice.
Motorway police personnel recovered 16 rifles, 89 ammunition magazines and 48 pistols, while there were 15,300 live ammunition rounds in the car.
After hearing about the incident, DIG (Motorway Zone) Ashfaq Ahmed and Sector Commander Ashiq Hussain Chohan reached the scene of the incident.
According to initial investigation, the police officials said the suspects were attempting to smuggle the heavy consignment of arms into Lahore from Peshawar. The suspect and the seized weapons have been handed over to Chontra police station where further legal procedure will be carried out.
