ISLAMABAD: A motorcyclist was killed on Tuesday evening in a traffic accident involving a vehicle belonging to a Saudi diplomat.
The incident happened in the Shalimar police station’s jurisdiction after a vehicle crushed a motorcyclist to death. According to the station house officer (SHO), the vehicle’s driver was taken into custody after the incident and the vehicle was impounded.
The deceased’s body was shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS). Police said he was identified as Muhammad Irfan and was a furniture maker by profession.
Superintendent Police Saddar Hamza Humayun said the vehicle was being driven by 23-year-old son of Saudi contractor Faisal Bin Terad. He said the Saudi contractor does not have diplomatic status and therefore, he does not have immunity.
He said the driver has Saudi and American driving licences but not the driving license of Islamabad. The police officer said that CCTV footage is being checked and action will be taken according to the law.
Earlier, a US embassy official was involved in a car crash in the federal capital. Col Joseph had jumped a red light in Daman-e-Koh Chowk and hit a motorcycle. As a result, two riders of the bike suffered injuries and one of them later died.
Col Joseph was let go by the Islamabad police in line with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961 which gives diplomat immunity from criminal prosecution.
