At least 31 people have died and 43 have been injured in rain-related incidents in Pakistan since June 27, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported this week.
Heavy rains lashed various parts of Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa this week, causing rivers to rise to dangerous levels and urban flooding in some urban areas.
According to a report released by the NDMA on Saturday, six people died in Punjab, 18 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and seven in Sindh between June 27 and 28. The highest number of injuries was reported from Punjab, where 21 people were injured, followed by 16 in Sindh and six in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The NDMA has issued weather-related alerts across the country and has predicted more rain and thunderstorms in the next 24 to 48 hours.
Pakistan Television (PTV) reported, citing the NDMA: “Due to continuous and heavy rains, the drainage system in urban areas will not be able to bear the load, which is likely to lead to severe urban flooding in low-lying areas.”
“Heavy and continuous rains are likely to cause flooding in mountain and river channels, especially in mountainous areas.”
On the other hand, the death toll due to drowning in the Swat River due to floods in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has risen to 12, the provincial rescue service 1122 reported on Sunday.
Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Faizi said on Friday that the water level in the Swat River had risen to a dangerous level, trapping 16 people, of whom three were rescued.
