Mitchell Starc became the fastest bowler to take 60 wickets in the history of ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023.
The left-arm speedster’s outstanding spell in the tournament’s semi-final matchup against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday saw him accomplish this achievement in just 27 matches.
In his opening seven overs, Starc claimed two wickets, first taking out vice-captain Aiden Markram and then captain Temba Bavuma.
Starc had taken 22 wickets in 2015 and 27 of them in the 2019 edition of the tournament. He has taken 11 scalps already this year and looks lethal with the five-time champions appearing set to make it to the final of the tournament.
This World Cup, Starc hasn’t played at the peak of his abilities. Even though he had been rested from the last game against Bangladesh, the bowler was slowly making his way back into the starting lineup.
From the outset of this game, the bowler performed admirably, launching himself into full speed, bringing the ball in, and regularly hitting the right-handed hitters’ pads.
Australia will be happy that Starc is regaining his groove ahead of a potential matchup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19 against the in-form Indian side. Starc has performed admirably for Australia with this strategy on a regular basis.
