Milk price in Karachi has once again increased by Rs 20 per liter after the approval of the commissioner.
According to an official notification issued on Tuesday, the new price of milk within the city will stand at Rs200 per liter. This adjustment will also affect different stakeholders within the supply chain, with dairy farmers receiving Rs180 per liter, wholesalers obtaining Rs188 per liter, and retailers selling at Rs200 per liter.
It’s worth noting that just four months ago, the former commissioner of Karachi had set the official price of milk at Rs 180 per liter. However, this rate was largely disregarded in practice, as milk was being sold in most areas of the city for prices ranging from 220 to 230 rupees per liter.
The previous commissioner had assured the public that the rate of Rs 180 was established after extensive consultations with all relevant stakeholders, with the goal of ensuring that milk would be available at this official rate throughout the city. Unfortunately, this promise remained unfulfilled, as milk sellers quickly raised their prices to Rs 210 per liter as soon as the official rate was set at Rs180.
This price increase has generated mixed reactions among Karachi’s residents and various industry players. While some are concerned about the impact on their budgets and daily expenses, others are hopeful that this adjustment will lead to more stability in the milk market. Only time will tell how this decision will affect the overall milk industry in Karachi and the wallets of its consumers.
