A blind fruit seller has set an example through hard work rather than resorting to begging or seeking help from others.
Sabir Ali Sabri, who has a fruit cart in Hijrat Colony near PIDC, said that he has never lost hope or is dependent on anyone but earns his livelihood through hard work.
At this fruit card is a placard stating, “Request from a blind man. I do not beg. Please buy some fruit and help me.”
Interestingly, Sabir can easily recognize the quantity of fruit and even the notes customers pay him. He is currently selling bananas but also sells other seasonal fruit.
Sabri said that all types of customers come to him he deals with them easily. On how he remembers how much they pay him, he says that every note is of a different size and he knows them really well and can easily identify them.
Sabir said he has been selling fruit for 25 years including over ten years in Karachi and the rest in his native Punjab.
Sabir said he currently has 80 dozen bananas in his cart. He needs to sell at least 50 dozen to meet his daily expenses. The prices range from Rs100 to Rs400 per dozen. “I give what they offer me and never complain.”
Regarding the rising inflation, he said, “We should be grateful to Allah. I would advise blind people to set up some small business rather than asking for help.”
