Neelam Gokulsing, a Hindu from Mauritius who now lives in Dubai, says that fasting during Ramadan has led her to a path of self-discovery.
Her fasting experience traces back to her time in Malaysia, where she was a student and later a professional. “Malaysia’s significant Muslim population influenced me to fast during Ramadan in 2021. Having many Muslim friends there, we observed suhoor and iftar together. For me, it was about solidarity and respecting their culture despite being Hindu,” Neelam said while sharing her story with Khaleej Times.
Upon moving to Dubai two years ago, Neelam continued fasting, influenced by the communal practice during Ramadan. She gained a deeper understanding of the challenges of fasting while balancing work responsibilities. Now, fasting holds a profound spiritual significance for her, emphasizing self-purification and embracing associated values.
Neelam describes her daily routine during Ramadan, highlighting the significance of iftar gatherings with colleagues. She sees fasting as a practice found in various cultures and religions, promoting discipline and introspection.
Fasting has provided Neelam with insights into her own character, heightening her awareness of habits and desires. Despite the initial challenges, she finds determination to maintain the fast, recognizing the sense of accomplishment and community it fosters.
Looking ahead, Neelam aims to learn Arabic, recognizing its social and professional benefits in her long-term residency in the UAE.
