LAHORE: A man has been arrested in Lahore’s Defence area for violently attacking another man two days ago after a video of the assault went viral on social media.
The victim has not been named but the attacker has been identified as Aqeel Mirza. The police traced him through his sports utility vehicle’s licence plate.
He was filmed violently attacking the victim on the median near the Cavalry Ground traffic light. He kicked him in the head multiple times on the side of the pavement. The man can also be seen threatening the victim with a handgun that he grabs from his car.
The arrest came hours after Lahore CCPO Zulfiqar Hameed took notice of the incident and issued orders for immediate action against the aggressor.

In the video, filmed by people in the car behind them, his licence plate number is visible. The police, including Cantt SP, raided his house in Defence on Sunday afternoon but he wasn’t there.
Mirza’s mother told the police that her son had left for Islamabad two hours earlier. He was telephoned to return back home where he was arrested.
Lahore Cantt SP identified the arrested person as Aqeel Mirza and confirmed that he was the man seen exhibiting violent behaviour in the widely circulated video.
Police officials confirmed the assault took place on Saturday after a minor collision between the victim and perpetrator’s cars. They confirmed the gun seen in Aqeel’s hand was a licensed weapon and has been seized by the police.
