Baloch Yakjehti Committee leader Dr. Mahrang Baloch has been named in Time magazine’s esteemed ‘2024 Time100 Next’ list for her nonviolent struggle of Baloch rights, the publication announced on Wednesday.
The Time100 Next list honors 100 up-and-coming influencers who are having a big impact at a young age, such as activists, athletes, and artists. The journal emphasizes how influence and leadership have many facets and are no longer restricted to specific conventional forms.
Having led the December 2023 march to Islamabad, Dr. Mahrang was chosen for this award because of her unwavering dedication to advancing justice. In order to draw attention to the problem of forced disappearances in Balochistan, she joined hundreds of other women in calling for justice for their husbands, sons, and brothers who went missing.
Reacting to the announcement on Facebook, Dr. Mahrang said that she is honored and delighted to be named among the top 100 emerging leaders of the world by TIME.
She dedicate this recognition to all Baloch women human rights defenders and the families of victims of enforced disappearances.
Dr. Mahrang’s activism began after her father, Ghaffar Longove, disappeared in December 2009 outside a Karachi hospital when she was still in primary school. As the eldest of six siblings, she became a symbol of resilience, famously burning her schoolbooks in protest outside the Quetta Press Club to demand her father’s return. His mutilated body was found in 2011.
Dr. Mahrang was instrumental in planning a significant demonstration against the continued enforced disappearances that took place in Islamabad in December 2023. According to a report published in July 2024, there were 197 new cases of missing persons in the first half of the year, the majority of which were in Balochistan.
