Prominent Pakistani actress Mahira Khan was honored in UK Parliament for her exceptional contributions to the cinema, culture and women’s empowerment.
British Member of Parliament Afzal Khan hosted an award ceremony at the House of Commons to acknowledge Mahira Khan’s efforts in advocating and supporting global cinema as well as her role as a cultural ambassador. Parliamentarians from various parties appreciated her influence on cultural exchange and women’s empowerment.
MP Afzal Khan appreciated Mahira’s talent, brilliance, and poise at the event, saying she became an inspirational figure not only for Pakistani women but for women in general in the world. He appreciated the fact that she could breathe life to powerful stories and captivate international audiences in the process of cultural understanding.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sarah Naeem acknowledged Mahira’s exceptional efforts in advocating for women’s empowerment.
“Mahira Khan has inspired women not just in Pakistan but across the world, how to knock the doors of their dreams with strength and determination,” she said.
“Today, we pay tribute to her as the first Pakistani actress to be honored here in the British Parliament, a tribute possible with the support of MP Afzal Khan, Labor Asians Society, and Samara Events UK,” she added.
Mahira shared her thoughts on her journey. “I really have a lot to thank the people around me,” she said. Reflecting upon her roots, Mahira talked about her growing up in a Pashtun family in Karachi, studying at Foundation Public School and later at Santa Monica College and the University of Southern California in the US.
She also mentioned that her parents taught her and her siblings values of equality and education.
In her message to the public, Mahira thanked all those mentors, directors, teachers, friends, and family who have always been for her. “My parents always believed equal education,” she said. “There were people who inspired and encouraged me through challenging times, celebrating my successes. I have stood on the shoulders of mentors, directors, fans, and friends who made everything possible.”
