HEC removes names of blacklisted for plagiarism

Azmat Khan by Azmat Khan
March 8, 2022

KARACHI: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has removed the list of persons involved in plagiarism from its website. Among them was the name of a former vice-chancellor and project director of the university who has also been a member of the Higher Education Commission.

The Higher Education Commission released a list of people involved in plagiarism on its website in 2016. There were 8 people in the said list whose articles proved to be 40 to 50 percent plagiarism. This investigation of plagiarism was proved by the Committee for Anti-plagiarism of the Higher Education Commission after which the list of persons involved was released.

According to the list, Muhammad Naeem of the Department of Computer Science at ZABIST University had copied a report on the Study of Pakistan Election System as an Intelligent e-Election European Union Election Observation Machine ie Pakistan National Provincial Assembly Election. The said person was blacklisted by HEC and added to the list.

Similarly, Ghulam Abbas Sahito and KH Lashari of Freshwater Biology and Fisheries Department of Sindh University had printed the stolen separate articles under their own names and committed 100% plagiarism on the basis of which both were blacklisted.

The list also includes the names of Jahanzeb Haider and Akbar Ali of Bahauddin Zakaria University, who stole the report of a researcher named Irfanullah and later published it under his own name.

In this way, Nasir Hussain and Umair Anis of Capital University of Science and Technology stole the dissertation of one of their students’ KMS and published a pamphlet in their own name. The name of Nasir Khan, former Vice-Chancellor of Haripur University and current Project Director of Pak-Austria University is also added to the list.

Nasir Khan stole material from various sources in his Ph.D. dissertation. The HEC’s Standing Committee on Pleasureism investigated the case and recommended that Nasir Khan’s Ph.D. be revoked from the University of Peshawar. At the same time, Nasir Khan was also blacklisted. The full list of these blacklisted individuals was available on the HEC website until December 2021.

However, the disappearance of the list from the HEC website was revealed when the current HEC chairman, Dr. Tariq Banuri, resumed his post. Surprisingly, Nasir Khan, former Vice-Chancellor of Haripur University and current Project Director of Pak-Austrian University, who was involved in plagiarism and was also among the blacklisted persons of HEC, was also made a member of the Commission. ۔ However, Dr. Tariq Banuri terminated Nasir Khan’s HEC membership but later it was found out that the said list has also been removed from the HEC website.
