The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has officially declared the launch of the nation’s inaugural lunar rover, scheduled for 2028, as part of the Chang’E 8 mission led by China.
In recognition of this significant milestone in space exploration, SUPARCO has initiated a nationwide competition inviting the public to propose a name for the lunar rover. The winner will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 100,000 and will receive national acknowledgment.
The contest, themed “Name Pakistan’s Lunar Rover,” aims to engage students, space enthusiasts, and the general populace throughout Pakistan in this exciting venture into space.
Participants are encouraged to submit a distinctive and meaningful name along with a brief rationale for their selection, as stated by the commission.
The lunar rover is set to be positioned at the lunar south pole and will be outfitted with advanced scientific instruments developed by Pakistani scientists, in addition to a collaborative scientific payload created by Chinese and European researchers.
The lunar rover is essential for exploring the Moon’s surface, traversing challenging terrains, conducting scientific investigations, and relaying vital data back to Earth.
Through lunar studies, scientists can uncover valuable information regarding Earth’s history, planetary development, and the possibilities for sustaining life beyond our planet.
